2009-2010 NASA Iowa Space Grant Scholarship Program

Purpose

• To provide a scholarship opportunity, primarily for first and second year undergraduates in Science/Technology/Engineering/Math (STEM) disciplines.
• To improve retention, involvement in research, and to encourage participation in Iowa Space Grant Consortium (ISGC) base program activities at each ISGC academic affiliate campus.

Eligibility

• U.S. Citizenship required.
• Full-time enrollment at Drake, Iowa State, Iowa, or Northern Iowa as of August 2009.
• Graduation date May 2010 or later.
• Awardees will be required to enroll in an independent study course for the Fall 2009 and Spring 2010 semesters with the base program faculty.
• Students from underrepresented groups are especially encouraged to apply.

Description

The awardee will generally receive a $7,000 scholarship (or fellowship if a graduate student) as two equal payments (Fall 2009 and Spring 2010) applied to their university account after receipt of an acceptance letter.  Awardees will need to provide an unofficial transcript upon graduation and agree to participate in a NASA longitudinal tracking process which surveys student progress and eventual employment outcome to help assess the effectiveness of the program.

Selection

The awards will be made to the students who have the strongest likelihood of contributing to the objectives of the base program at their respective campus.  For brief descriptions and links to our base programs click here. (Please Note: The Spacecraft Systems and Controls Lab at ISU is not an option in this competition.)  Potential applicants should learn about their campus base program and are encouraged to discuss the requirements of the independent study course with the following managers before applying:

The selections will be made by the ISGC Campus Coordinator at each campus, in consultation, with the base program manager (listed above) and the ISGC Director.

Applications must be completed by 4:00 p.m. on 2 February 2009. Selections will be made by 27 February 2009.
