WHAT YOU COULD WIN:
The winning classroom will receive a Meade ETX Astro
telescope
for their school. The teacher will win a
Garmin e-TREX GPS receiver.
The entire class will win a trip
to the
Science Station
in Cedar Rapids. The teachers at the school will win an inservice training session from the
Extension - Science Engineering and Technology
(E-SET) team
along with a load of great curriculum materials, posters, etc. The total prize package could be worth as much as $5,000.
WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO ENTER:
Any classroom
of students in any grade level from Kindergarten through Twelfth
Grade attending a charter, public, private, religious, or home school
in
Iowa. (Note: Home Schoolers must form a group
to be eligible) If you have questions about the eligibility in
your case, call 800-854-1667 and ask for an eligibility check.
The intent of this competition is to reward a classroom of students
(normally from a few students to about 35 students) who meet during a
specific hour.
It is NOT a chance to win the prize for an entire grade level or an
entire school.
HOW THE COMPETITION WORKS:
During Space Week, October 4-10, 2002, WHO Radio
(1040 AM) will broadcast special Space Week editions of the Earth & Sky program each
day. The morning broadcast will take place between 6:30 and 7:00 a.m.
WHO Radio
may repeat the same program broadcast in the evening. The Earth & Sky
program will cover a different Space Week topic each day. If the students
cannot listen to WHO
Radio during these times, the broadcasts are also available
on the
Earth & Sky web site
(http://www.earthsky.com).
There are also classroom activities that support each topic available through
the links in the table below. The schedule is as follows:

The classroom teacher administers the closed-book quiz, scores the results, and forwards the results to the ISGC office. The Quiz results serve as the classroom entry and must be received in the ISGC office by 4:00 pm on Friday, October 18, 2002. The entry results must be in the prescribed format and can be E-mailed (preferred) to isgc@iastate.edu or faxed to Carmen's attention at 515-294-3361 or delivered to room 2365 Howe Hall, Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa. The results will be tallied and the winner announced on Wednesday, October 23, 2002.
The classroom that does the best on the quiz, wins the prize.
THE QUIZ:
The quiz will be posted here on Friday, October 11, 2002 in PDF format, Word
Format, and Text format. There will be ten multiple choice questions on
the K-3 grade quiz and 20 multiple choice questions on the 4-8 and 9-12 grade
quizzes. Each question is worth ten points for grades K-3 and five points
for grades 4-8 and 9-12. There will also be a short answer bonus question
to be answered by the classroom as a group. The quiz is closed-book.
All questions will be developed from material found in the text of the
Earth & Sky broadcasts
on WHO Radio during Space Week
(also available at the Earth

and from the supporting activities available from the links given above.
