CONSORTIUM 1999 EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITY GRANTS
Category One: Elementary School
Dr. Robert Davis, Principal - Crestview Elementary, Clive, IA
The complete staff at Crestview Elementary will develop skills in inquiry
learning through a one day on-sight, hands-on workshop "The Oooze and
Ahhhz for Science Teaching" offered by the Wild Goose Company.
Category Two: Middle/Junior High School
Ganesh Ganpat, Executive Director -
Science Station,
Cedar Rapids, IA
The Science Station will develop a curriculum for use in schools and
after-school programs using Robotix Kits that allow students to
create their own space rovers. The goal of the curriculum will be
to provide a hands-on experience focusing on space exploration and
its application to daily life.
Doug Smith - Linn-Mar Community School District, Marion, IA
Goals of this curriculum development project include: developing wetland
related activities for middle school students; purchasing equipment;
raising awareness of the students to biodiversity of wetlands and their
importance to the environment; and showing how all disciplines are
intertwined with the wetlands.
Wendy Zohrer - The E Resources
Group, Inc., West Des Moines, IA Upper elementary and middle school students will take part in a new
and innovative program called "Forestry Connections". Students
will participate in a live interactive field trip via the ICN,
complete activities in "Trees for Kids" and "Trees for Teens",
and develop and implement student action projects following the
broadcast.
Category Three: High School
Ernest Schiller - Central Lee High School, Donnellson, IA The goal of this curriculum development project for an advanced
Biology class is to encourage student understanding of
biotechnology and encourage interest in career possibilities
for these students in planning their future education.
EDUCATOR INCENTIVE PROGRAM
Kathleen Lockard,
Teacher - East Union Community School District, Afton, IA
Kathleen will attend the 5th Annual International Space Station
Educators Conference. Kathleen will share information through her
classroom and a school wide space station day, Young Astronauts
Club, Family Math/Science Nights and at the state math and science
conferences.
Rich Rebouche', Principal - Castle Hill School, Waterloo, IA
Dr. Rebouche' and Sandra Lichty, teacher, will attend the April
Aerospace Education Conference in Orlando, FL. Materials and
information obtained will be used in an elementary program for students
with severe behavior disorders.
